Las Adelitas and Curious Myths
If your in New York this summer check out this exhibition. Las Adelitas - Like the exhibition title suggests, Ji’s fifteen, acrylic-on-panel portraits depict fierce and feminine soldaderas, the spiritual sisters of women who assisted and fought alongside troops in the Mexican Revolution and were immortalized in folksong with the corrido “La Adelita.”
Ji’s figures are warriors of sexual and moral ambiguity. With haunting and alluring beauty, they brim over melodramatically with a mix of sexual provocation and danger, as well as the threat of decay implicit in their skeletal markings.
What distinguishes Las Adelitas are the paintings’ uneasy admixture of the traditional and the contemporary.
Art from the New World Exhibition
Bristol City Museum, Bristol, UK - Until 22nd August 2010
Art from the New World showcases brand new work by 49 of the finest emerging US contemporary artists and has been curated by the Corey Helford Gallery in Los Angeles.
This great exhibition has a lot to offer most people. There is a huge amount of exciting, thought-provoking, urban, sexy and haunting work - we loved the pieces by Buff Monster, Luke Cheuh, Joshua Petker, Lola, Ray Caesar and Todd Schorr and others but there are too many to mention! The exhibition runs until 22nd August so there is still plenty of time to see it, it really is worth the trip....
Artists exhibiting include: Luke Cheuh, Van Arno, Camille Rose Garcia, Joshua Petker, Eric Joyner, David Stoupakis, Johnny Rodriguez, Buff Monster, Ron English and Melissa Forman to name a few!

The Mother Beef - We Could Live Here (live session)
'I've been wanting to talk about this band for ages, finally I can. 'The Mother Beef' spent a couple of hours last saturday recording a session at Christchurch Studios. Afterwards I walked away with suicide beats jumping around my veins and feeling like i'd witnessed something special. Nice one Brian.' vinceviral
"Tom Tetley's new project the Mother Beef steps out with 7 league boots from it's hiding place in the Hindu Kush mountains into the traditionally spaced out environs of the South West of England to deliver a sound wrapped up in suicide riffs, Blues traditionalism, and Sunday morning lyrics, delivered by someone you can tell is still living in that Sunday morning moment.
Produced by the internationally renowned production team 'The Insects' , The Mother Beef comes with an assured debut whose music echoes the best of raw rock and roll (MC5, Stooges, The Verve at it's most psychedelic, The Velvets) and with songs that sound like a menacing city whisper on a stoned preachers lips...
With a set of influences belying his years, Tetley has crafted something his own, the sound of young, love blasted England, coming down, walking home....."

K-Guy Interview
Malcom MacClaren once said "It's better to be a flamboyant failure than any kind of benign success"
I like that.
We caught up with K-Guy to find out a thing or two about him...
HOLY F-CK!
Congratulations to all our artists - Dora, James Starr, K-GUY,Ben Slow, STATIC, The Art Tart and Motorboy who were part of the Dreweatts 'Urban Contemporary' Auction on Weds night - especially to Dora whose piece sold for a fantastic £2,200!
We have some brilliant work from Dora in the gallery: Coffee Cream (above) - one of four pieces made with this image on wood, each original with its own unique colour sceme and all individually hand finished with gesso and acrylic. A similar piece to this (Golden Brown) sold at auction on Weds night.
Holy Fuck - Acrylic Hand finished Screen Print on Wood and La La Libby - a beautiful ink and watercolour piece, framed at Niche in Bristol
All 3 pieces are gorgeous - particularly La La Libby, which is an unusual one off original from Dora that we think we are very lucky to have! Just click on each image to see them in the shop.....
D*FACE London’s king of stickering and billboard taker-overs, has designed the album cover for Christina Aguilera’s upcoming album, Bionic. Not that I’m about to go and buy the album, but the cover certainly looks great. We also like the Riot Coke piece that went out this winter.
We caught up with Bristol based artist Lee Ellis to get the lowdown from him about how he does what he does. We happen to think he's rather special and are excited to have his work in the gallery.
We've seen Lee in action painitng for us at Rump in Decmeber and its fascinating to watch......

'I hate most of my work to be honest, that's why it doesn't last very long! '
Police State in Stokes Croft
Police move in on Stokes Croft to remove squatters from proposed Tesco site..
We have tried to stay away from this whole argument on the proposed new 'Tesco' site in Stokes Croft. We sell art after all, we are not a political party. However, after witnessing a publicly funded police force ignore public opinion and forcibly remove people trying to make a stand against the 'corporisation' of every interesting nook and cranny of this withering Island. I think it's time to do our bit.
Over 2000 people in the local area have democratically registered their wish to have a debate about this issue and look at alternatives to Tesco, There is a Tesco already less than 1/4 mile away and 14 within two miles of this site!
As usual the council say their hands are tied and pander after corporate greed like pigs around a fresh trough, ignoring the valid and forward thinking views of the people who are funding them. Can they really do nothing about Tesco moving in on this community? (Tescos rant cont... )
As we have seen over the past 10 years, it appears this country is becoming a 'politically correct police state' in aid of corporate greed, funded by a Labour Government obsessed with shiny things and the trappings of power. A Government that would rather build casinos, strip clubs and promote the arms trade than promote community cohesion and local initiative.
The sad thing is, the local artists and small businesses that make Stokes Croft such an amazing community, will not be here in 5 years because the corporate dogs will move in, bump up the rents and rates and fill the high street with the same 'Global' crap you see on every other high street in Britain.
And this is progress? More about Tesco profits on Tescopoly

"Deeply sick and corrupting of the young....I'll be raising this in the 'House Of Commons" (Ann Widdecombe - 'The Times')
"It's the best board game I've ever played, better than drugs themselves.." (Shaun Ryder - 'The Happy Mondays')

Fear And Loathing On Brick Lane...
Fortunes won and lost at the Dreweatts Urban Art auction;
1loveart's FLX, Dora and Hine got a good reception at the auction on Tuesday. We saw Dora's boards triple in value and FLX's work double.
It's fair to say the auction brought a few surprises with some lots selling far below estimate and a total of 16 unsold lots, this brought a mixed reception from buyers and dealers in the immediate aftermath.
